Garrison Charles Avery

West Point, 2004

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by A Former Subordinate on February 8, 2006:

I didn't really know Avery all that well, but I remember him. He was a squad leader in my platoon at Beast. He was professional, quiet, but had an enthusiasm that was apparent to all. His squad would follow him anywhere, and ate up the voluntary extra patrol training he took them on at Frederick. He had patience: He was the only one willing to listen to me pass off the pile of knowledge I still had to mow through (after hearing "Slum & Gravy" mangled over and over again, you see how patient you would be...). A lot's been said about his knack for modifying his uniform...from bedroll cutouts in his pants to his special kidney belt on his ruck, all us new cadets were in awe at his sewing and 100mph-taping abilities; he may have not always done everything 'by the book', but it was obvious to us that he cared about his duty and his subordinates.
My sincere condolances to his family; we all miss him.
